Child Face Exhibit

with 3 comments

The Child Study Center at UVa. and Cat Thrasher Photography are looking for 4 to 6-year-old children to make faces for the camera! Photographs would be used in future studies in the CSC as well as be put on display in a Science & Art exhibit in Charlottesville this fall 2009!

Dr. Vanessa LoBue, a postdoc in the Department of Psychology, and I are collaborating to explore children’s reactions to facial expressions made by other children. There is a lot of research on how people react to pictures of facial expressions of basic emotions (e.g., anger, happiness, sadness) made by adults, but no research on how subjects respond when presented with the same expressions made by children. We want to know: at what age do these emotional expressions have the same kind of emotional impact to the viewer? Do we react to  child facial expressions the same way we react to adult faces?

We are creating a series of photographs of 4 to 6-year-old children making facial expressions of basic emotions, and we need your help! Do you know of a child that likes to ham it up for the camera? Send them our way!

Want to participate? Sign up through Cat by calling 703.864.1712 or emailing cat@catthrasher.com. You can also call the Child Study Center at 434.243.5234 and ask about the face pictures. Appointments take place in Gilmer Hall, on grounds at UVA, and can be scheduled during the week or on Saturdays. Visits can last up to 30 minutes if your child would like to participate in additional studies, or take as few as 10 minutes for the face pictures alone. Children will receive a small toy for participation and parents will be emailed digital copies of their favorite pictures!

  1. Do you have any wings for an infant girl portrait? She has honey bees painted in her bedroom and she is so tiny and precious, I’d love to get her picture taken naked with lil wings for a gift for her family.
