Cat Thrasher Woman is the New Cat Thrasher Boudoir

leave a comment »

This morning, I experienced a series of epiphanies.

I have been thinking a lot lately of  my business model, both compared to my personal goals and the greater field of portrait photography. In particular, the boudoir portion of my business has been weighing on my mind. My original thought was that boudoir is a really exciting, new category in personal photography that I want to be a part of. Being that I have a lot of experience shooting nude portraits, I decided, while spending the fall in Seattle, to put together my portfolio and put up a website. Yet, the whole time, it felt like something was missing. The problem is this: having a separate website for boudoir photography separates it from the other woman-centered types of photography, such as maternity and fashion, and, in a way, undermines the boudoir photography message: be proud of your body and your womanhood.

Women are many things. They are sexy and fun, like in fashion and boudoir photography. They are nurturing and caring, as evoked in maternity photography. They can also be classy, as portrayed in intimate portraits and art photography. None of these qualities are mutually exclusive, and continuing to keep them separated forces us to shorten the definition of what it means to be a woman. Thus, it hit me this morning that if we are to truly harness womanhood in front of the lens, we need to combine all of these categories into a package. The Woman Package, if you will.

Thus, you will soon notice changes in the site. Stay tuned!

Megan and Her Belly on a Rainy Afternoon in January

with one comment

Megan is one of those people who, despite the ice, rain, and cold weather, is still willing to go for a small hike in the woods while 9 months pregnant. These are the people who make Virginia so wonderful!

Later, we dried off in the studio for some classic portraits. The photograph below is my favorite from the session, partly because the rain had worked wonders with her hair, and as it dried in the studio, it began curling and swelling, reflecting light in all the right places. I am also drawn to her hand, relaxed and sitting on her belly, which is both powerful and compassionate.

Congratulations to Megan and John, who welcomed a healthy baby boy into the world on Saturday!
