Tangerines and loveliness!

leave a comment »

It’s this baby girl’s first birthday, and when I attempted to make a still-life out of her, she and the cat made it very clear that there was not going to be any sitting still. (How naïve of me!) Yet, then the shoot turned into the perfect mix of planned and unplanned.

The cat started out as my model (great for metering – thanks cat!):

It was a friendly cat, but we thought it best to get him off the table:

so that I could get some cleaner shots:

but that cat was all about that table:

This a great example of how shoots can be a collaboration between the photographer and the subject (and sometimes even the subject’s pets!).

Newborn session: Due on Christmas day, came a little early…

with 2 comments

I wanted to share this session with everyone because it was rather special: while I normally go to people’s houses to shoot newborns, these guys came to me in the studio! This was great because in the studio, I can exhibit a lot more control over lighting conditions and set-up. And he was such a beautiful baby!

Here he is, 12 days old:

Congratulations to the new fam!

Thanksgiving at Joshua Wilton House

with 3 comments

This Thanksgiving, my family decided to do something most-unusual for us, and go out to eat! The place of choice was Joshua Wilton House, a fancy inn and restaurant in downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia. Harrisonburg is full of Victorian buildings such as the Joshua Wilton House, but so often you look at the outside and beg a god of some sort to come down and instantly renovate it back to its original grandeur. This is not one of those places: every cosmetic detail on this house is perfect. The moulding! The colors! Loved every bit of it!

I took these photos of the fam while waiting to sit down. Enjoy!

(Jim took this one.)

Open House for the Child Development Labs at UVa

leave a comment »

This weekend was the first Child Development Labs Open House, so I was there giving out free on-the-spot portraits for kids who signed up to participate in research. The labs are especially in need of families with newborns, as our researchers look at infants as young as 4 months of age. As technology changes and more people use cell phones, it has been increasingly hard to find families to participate in studies using traditional methods, such as looking through the Daily Progress birth announcements and using the phone book. However, on Saturday, 45 brand new families signed up to participate in studies and over 80 people came to get their free snapshot! Thanks to everyone for stopping by and making the event such a success.

If you had to leave before picking up your snapshot, email me at with your snail-mail address and I will mail it to you!

As I have stated previously, I am a also a researcher with CDL, studying the development of attention and the psychophysiology emotion in young infants. Other projects I am working on include an art-science collaboration with a post-doc from the labs, Vanessa LoBue, who is now at New York University. We are still in need of 4-to-6 year old participants for a stimulus set we are creating of children making emotional facial expressions. Let me know if you would like to participate!
