The Olympic Peninsula

leave a comment »

A couple days ago, we visited the Olympic Peninsula and went on an intense hike during an epic downpour. The only other people out on the trail were an elderly couple from New Zealand who just looked at us through the rain and squinted as we passed them on the trail. I took the picture below after the first half of the hike.

Later, after trudging and crawling through wet, muddy, uncut trail that reminded me of a scene I had recently read from Mailer’s wartime novel, The Naked and the Dead, I ended up falling viciously on my knee while attempting to rappel down a wet cliff side. What a bummer!

I found the rain forest incredibly beautiful, complex, and almost pensive during the rainstorm. It was as though we were seeing it simultaneously consume, grow, and birth as the rain was falling – nothing stopped as it does in civilization when it rains – instead it overtly flourished, right in front of us.

Morning Walks in Ballard

with one comment

This fall, we are living in the section of Seattle called Ballard, which was recently described in the New York Times as “independent-minded…Nordic and proudly maritime.”

We quickly made it a habit to go for walks in the morning, when few people are walking the streets, the line at Besalu cafe hasn’t yet extended out the door, and the fog is still sitting on the many bodies of water in Seattle.

Below are some of the notable pictures from these walks.

A sunny morning.

Classic Seattle fog.

(Also, in this picture, Cochise staring at a beatnik in a sleeping bag, off frame to the left.)
